Brick Staining News

Let’s Change the Color of Absorbent Clay Brick the Right Way

"Using a MCI Proprietary Proven Masonry Stain"

"One That Will Never Hurt a Brick"

Absorbency of the brick's surface is key. Just throw some water on a brick. If it darkens when it gets wet, then the brick is a good candidate for MCI's Proprietary Proven Masonry Stain. This water test also tells us what degree of color change is possible for a brick. As the brick surface absorbs water, the darker its color becomes indicates that a larger degree of color change can take place.

Remember, this is not a paint or a paint-like stain. Our process involves a translucent slurry that does not cover or impact the brick color in the same way that semi to opaque stains do. Semi to opaque stains also create a problematic layer on the brick surface. Yes, some of their advertising will say these stains are absorbed into the brick surface like our process does, and some of the products we compete against do. But they all create a layer that can start to fade, crack, blister, flake or peel in a short 3 to 4 years. For many of the jobs I have studied where semi to opaque stains have been used, their products compromised the integrity of the brick in the same ways that paint does.

Masonry Cosmetics’ Proprietary Proven Masonry Stain Will Never Hurt A Brick!

Most often, we use color theory when we change the color of brick. But we can also build and intensify brick color, by adding one application over another, resulting in a more significant color change. By using their semi-to-opaque stains, our competition does not need to do additional coatings up-front. This gives them a short term advantage. They also can spray or use rollers to apply their paint-like stains, which also speeds up their application time. You cannot do that with our process. We must apply our product with a brush, one brick at a time. While the short-term advantage of an opaque stain may seem to be a savings of time and money, in the long run, “short” is all you get. Their product just does not stand the test of time. Our process is slower, but its results are long lasting and outperforms the competition.

We also can add a select percentage of color to a brick wall artistically. For example, when individual bricks create a multi-colored pattern on a wall, we can repeat that pattern more easily on a new brick addition than paint-like stain companies can. Or, if a home or business owner would like some colored highlights or a pattern added to an existing plain-appearing brick wall, we can do that to increase the wall’s attractiveness. Our application process then becomes an advantage because we can be selective as to where various colors are applied on the wall, versus simply painting a wall one color, or applying a paint-like stain on selected bricks. In either scenario ‒ whether making a new brick wall match the pattern of existing brick, or adding enhancements to increase the attractiveness of existing brick ‒ when we complete the staining of the bricks, often you cannot detect where the original pattern ends and our stained pattern begins. If a wall gets wet, the stained and unstained brick sections, side by side, both get wet to the same degree, retaining their harmonious, natural looking pattern throughout.

Paint-like stains cannot make the same claim. When a wall gets wet, you can see exactly where their stain was applied. This is an unsightly outcome for the customer. We have seen projects where stain companies recommended that the wall gets sealed after they are done staining, to cover up this problem. This is an extra expense that a potential customer needs to be aware of when comparing our cost to theirs. For example, building owners do not always realize that once a stained wall is sealed, the 25 year warranty that may have been offered is null and void. Masonry Cosmetics sells staining on clay brick that is long lasting, and does not need sealing.

Adding “Staining the Right Way” to a construction budget prevents problems in advance that poor repairs and poor brick matches can cause. No more "Settling" for second best. For your construction additions and repairs, find the best brick match possible in size, texture, and color. Matching mortar color and joint type and pattern are also very important. If the match you come up with isn’t as close as you want or need, then add Staining with the Right Product. Call Masonry Cosmetics or one of its many Certified Contractors.
